Understanding When You Have Enough
How many of us find ourselves saying, “just a few more years?” It’s like a never-ending loop, a hamster wheel; you keep going and going but always end up at the same place, the same career, the same relationship. How do you know when you have enough? If enough is an endpoint, an elusive one for that matter, how do you know you’ve reached it?
To put your mind at ease, there definitely is a point where you’ve reached enough. But, of course, the trouble is determining what it looks like and what it feels like. Well. We’ve dedicated this article to exploring just that. So, let’s dive right into it.Why Do We Feel Like We Don’t Have Enough?
The first slice of pie is heaven. It is satisfying, delicious, and makes you feel content. But then are subsequent slices that only seem to replicate the feelings evoked by the first one. Eating these slices feels more forced and driven. You try to artificially recreate the joy received from the first slice with the pleasure you think you’ll receive from the other slices. One of my favorite lessons on finding happiness in life is one where acclaimed filmmaker George Lucas emphasizes the difference between joy and pleasure.
Here’s why we pursue the sort of happiness that comes from eating the subsequent slices of the pie:
· As we evolved, in terms of our needs, those of us who were more driven, nervous, and clinging had a higher chance of surviving and pass on their genes.
· In our consumer society, we are constantly bombarded with messages to purchase more stuff.
· Our past experiences leave us with a sense of anxiety, loss, resentment, inadequacy, hurt, guilt, or shame.
How to Know You Have Enough
The key to understanding when you have enough and what is truly contributing to your happiness is to recognize that what’s driving you to go for more material happiness is misguided.
Our natural inbuilt system tells us we should feel frustrated, threatened, and lonely. Our culture and capitalistic economy tell us we need more clothes, the newest iPhone, a body like a supermodel, etc. The remnants of past experiences tell us that we aren’t attractive, intelligent, worthy, capable, etc. That we need to do A, then B, then C, then D, in order to get E. You’re always told you need to do this first in order to get the life you want, except you can never do enough if you continue going on like this.
The important thing to understand is that you have the power to see through these lies and come to see the truth for what it is. You are worthy, you are capable, you are loved, you have enough, you are enough. Turn inwards and recognize your spirit, your talents, and your innate goodness. You are more than you make yourself out to be and you certainly have more than you could ever need.
